Acoustic Neuroma (Vestibular Schwannoma)

What is Acoustic Neuroma?

An acoustic neuroma is a non-cancerous, benign tumor that grows on the hearing and balance nerve. It usually grows slowly over time; some never grow. Even though it is not cancer, it can affect hearing, balance, and nearby nerves.

Symptoms

  • Gradual hearing loss in one ear

  • Ringing in one ear (tinnitus)

  • A feeling of fullness in the ear

  • Balance problems or unsteadiness

  • Facial numbness or weakness (usually with larger tumors)

Treatment

Treatment depends on growth behavior, size of the tumor, symptoms, and overall health. Options may include:

  • Careful monitoring with repeat MRI scans

  • Radiation therapy to stop growth

  • Surgery to remove the tumor

Because this tumor affects the hearing and balance nerves, careful evaluation and close monitoring by an ear specialist is crucial to ensure effective and evidence-based care.
