Cholesteatoma
What is a Cholesteatoma?
A cholesteatoma is an abnormal collection of skin cells that grow into a cyst inside the middle ear. It is not a cancer, but behaves like a tumor because it may slowly expand and damage nearby structures. Over time, this can lead to permanent hearing loss, imbalance, facial weakness, or brain infections if left untreated.
Symptoms
Ongoing or repeated ear drainage
Hearing loss
Ear fullness or pressure
Dizziness
Facial weakness (rarely in advanced cases)
Meningitis (rarely in advanced cases)
Treatment
Cholesteatoma does not go away on its own and usually requires surgery. The goal of surgery is to remove the growth and prevent further damage. Early evaluation and treatment are important to prevent complications and protect long-term hearing.
