Middle Ear Fluid

What is Middle Ear Fluid (Effusion)?

Middle ear effusion means there is fluid trapped behind the eardrum. This fluid is not always infected, but it can decrease hearing. Trapped fluid is common after a common cold, sinus infection, allergies, or ear infection. This is a frequent disease in children, however, adults can be affected as well.

Symptoms

  • Muffled or decreased hearing

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear

  • Popping or crackling sounds

  • Usually no severe pain

Treatment

Some cases improve on their own over several weeks to months. If fluid lasts several months or causes significant hearing problems, evaluation by an ear specialist is recommended. Treatment options may include:

  • Observation

  • Treating allergies or nasal congestion if present

  • A small incision (myringotomy) and/or ear tube to drain fluid
