Otosclerosis

What is Otosclerosis?

Otosclerosis is a condition where the stapes, one of the three small hearing bones in the middle ear, becomes stiff and does not vibrate properly. When this bone cannot vibrate, sound cannot travel to the brain, leading to hearing loss. It often develops slowly, may run in families, and may affect one or both ears.

Symptoms

  • Gradual hearing loss

  • Difficulty hearing low or soft sounds

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Treatment

Treatment depends on how much hearing loss is present and your personal preference. Options include:

  • Hearing aids

  • Surgery (stapedectomy) to restore sound transmission

  • Observation if hearing loss is mild

With proper evaluation and treatment, most patients experience significant improvement in hearing and quality of life.
